What We Learned From Our First Thirty Refills

When we ran our first refill events, we expected the appeal to be practical: half price, less packaging, done in two minutes. Those reasons were real. They were also not the interesting part.

The interesting part was the bottles themselves. People brought them back with sun-faded labels, with masking tape marking whose desk it lived on, with a rubber band around the neck for grip. One bottle came back with a child's sticker on the base that the owner asked us to work around. We did.

Nobody apologized for the condition of their bottle. If anything, there was a quiet pride in it — the same pride people take in a well-worn notebook or a repaired jacket. The wear was proof of use, and the refill was a decision to keep going rather than start over.

We started stamping a small card for each refill — bottle, date, batch. We called it a refill passport, half as a joke. People kept them. Several asked what happens at ten stamps. We hadn't planned anything. We are planning something now.

Thirty refills is a small number and we won't pretend otherwise. But it taught us the shape of the thing we're building: not a discount program, but a slow accumulation of evidence that an ordinary bottle can be worth keeping. The next events are listed on our refill page — bring your bottle, whatever state it's in.
